Finally decided on a pair of AE22s - active or passive??

Hi all

After much deliberation I've decided to go for a pair of Acoustic Energy AE22 monitors based on many reviews and the fact that I am more of a writer than a mixer and just need a solid pair of monitors that transfer mixes well to other systems. Question is, what is generally best, active or passive? Does an amp have any effect on the sound? do passives last longer than actives? As you can see I'm not well versed in all the technical stuff so any help in lamen's terms would be greatly appreciated.
