If you're starting guitar then the most important thing is learning to play using songs/tunes that you know and like. If you don't, you'll get bored and won't carry on. Every style will get you to about the same point technique-wise in about the same time, just using different tunes to get there. Eventually different styles will diverge with specific techniques, but before that point it doesn't matter a damn.
One exception to this is whether you use a plectrum or play fingerstyle. I would suggest starting playing using a plectrum (even if you're using a nylon-string guitar) and move onto fingerstyle after that, bcos that tends to be a better route to reliable strumming. Doesn't really matter too much though - it's easy enough to move from plectrum to fingerstyle or back again, just with suitable practise on the right-hand technique.
