Apologies to all concerned — that '400.000' is my error. I proofread it and signed it
off for print. I've checked that the numbers I submitted for layout were correct, so there
must have been a cut-and-paste or retyping error introduced at the page-makeup stage
(which happens, of course: I'm certainly not blaming our graphics department). I can only
assume that in the course of exhaustively checking all those six-digit numbers, I got to
'440.000' — the only one that I retain in my head, like many people — and somehow
'saw' it as correct, when it obviously wasn't.
Normal process would have seen it
proofed by a second pair of eyes, but we were flat out on magazine production and I
decided to trust my own diligence and accuracy. Possibly not my best decision ever...
My fault entirely. Sorry.
