You use it to interface with external MIDI devices that lack a USB alternative, using a MIDI cable. Eg send to and receive information outboard from synths or control surfaces.
What information would people usually send or receive from/to MicronAlesis/Pro40?
Do you know what MIDI is? Basically a set of instructions sent from one device to another to play certain notes or tweak certain parameters. There's no audio involved. A bit like an electronic equivalent of those punch-hole sheets used on player pianos in the wild west.
I do; data (not audio) being sent. However, I'm confused to what use I could get out of it that'll leave me at an advantage over simply recording hardsynths via outs.
I've only ever used MIDI on my keyboard controller for playing softsynth sounds on my computer.
