PLAYING WAV FILES ON LIVE GIGS

My son has various live band scenarios in grotty pubs. He would like to use Wav files occasionally, less keen on mp3, but is reluctant to use/lose/break his Mac. Does there exist a user friendly Wav/mps player *robust enough for gigging*, that allows him to select tracks, or does he really need a cheap laptop?
