Getting a great bass sound

Just after some advice please.

I work for reggae band.
The other day i did gig where the band i work for and another band were on the same bill and pa system in a large venue (2000 appox)

There bass sound sounded full and warm and heavy!
But when i put my band on after the bass just seemed poor in comparison and very frustrating.
I normally just compress the bass and tend not to touch the eq to much.

Is there something i can do to 'fatten' up the bass?
Is it just down to the bass guitar being used?

All comments greatly appreciated
