I would caution against it for the rasons others have stated: basically the uncertainity of knowing what kind of sockets and connections are in use (and for what purpose) in the different equipment you might connect as sources and destinations.

By the way -- HOT NEWS -- if you want to connect unbalanced equipment to a balanced line input, you can now buy ready-made pseudo-balanced cables designed to the 'SOS spec' and made exclusively for us by Pirahna using quality cable and neutrik connectors from the SOS shop:
