Reducing the wordlength from 24 to 16 bit and dithering shouldn't affect the stereo image in any way whatsoever. If it does, something is horribly wrong with your processing.

'Downmixing' is a term usually employed to describe reduction the number of channels involved in a soundstage, so from 5.1 to stsreo or from stereo to mono. In such cases the image will inherently become 'narrower'
