My experience disagrees with yours. I've used all of them except for the Marantz, the Yamaha MT4x is better than anything Tascam or Vestax ever made. For a while I used a Tascam Porta 02 and an MT4x and bounced between them, so I've spent a lot of time with both machines. I've also used various Tascam and Yamaha models, as well as the Vestax.

TO be fair they're all quite reliable, but the Yamaha has the best sound- for example the specified bandwidth is up to 18kHz, the others manage about 15kHz. I verified this myself using Maxell XLIIS tape, an oscillator and 'scope. It also has less wow and flutter, and less noise. Only the Marantz has better specs, and it got great reviews at the time.

So my advice is genuine. My Tascam has solenoid issues, the Yamaha is still working. You could buy an MT4x fairly cheaply and it would be far more reliable than the Vestax.
