Agreed that a well-implemented ITB solution is likely to get you the best results, but a single phono cable from the SPDIF out back into the SPDIF in avoids going through the DA/AD again and keeps the signal digital the whole way, so should be of a comparable quality to ITB.

I'd just give it a bit of a fiddle and see what works best for you!
