Song Copyright - should it ever expire?

Bit contentious this one, but worthy of debate given the fact that Elvis' copyright expires very soon, and The Beatles copyrights are looming up fast, as are many of the Sixties rockk-n-roll classics.

Surely, if you wrote a song and owned the copyright, like a house, you'd want it to remain within your family and be passed down from generation to generation, like an asset, wouldn't you?

Why should it become Public Domain after so many years? Who decreed that? It doesn't seem fair to me.
