828 mk2 USB problems

Hi all, I am having problems with my motu 828 USB

Interfacing with my Laptop (a compal CL56)
It sometimes plays sounds....

but more often than not it doesn't...
(I got some sound working randomly, but I didnt touch anything, it just... worked! for 5 brief seconds)

audio from external sources passes through the unit fine, and the routing bus passes sound through ok.

but say I want to play an audio file, it doesn't work.
In Reason you can select the asio drivers, but after a few seconds they revert back to displaying "no sound"....
Ive racked my brain, and even reformatted the machinem to no success. The most up to date chipset drivers are installed too...
anybody help?!
