Cubase tends to capture and hold the audio drivers exclusively whilst it's open. I can't remember the setting off hand (I think it's release ASIO in background) but you can set it up so that a few media players will work whilst cubase is open (vlc for one) but I think that comes down to them accessing direct sound seprately.

Hmmm.. I know i'm not being all that clear there, but I can't remember just what works with what and how, whilst i'm sat my desk with no copy of it in front of me.

Anyhow the point I was working towards is that sometimes when you shut down cubase it fails to release the audio drivers in the background, and then when you open up another media player it'll work but the sound card won't output due to Cubase still holding on to it's driver.

Pain in the arse sometimes, but a reboot sorts it.
