Turning off Mac's startup sound

Is there any other way of turning off the startup sound on a Mac without installing an application specifically for that purpose? I did a search on google and the only way seems to be this program, StartupSound.prefPane, but I wouldn't like to install an application that might mess with my audio setup. Any alternatives?
