Firstly, I know there's plenty of DI boxes out there that accept speaker level, but I'm not sure how high a level this relates to. Can anyone recommend a cheap but relatively solid model? I'm not looking for a great sounding box as it's for live use.
At the moment I'm using a behringer micromon to split my mic signal, going out of the headphone output to my headphones wireless transmitter, and feeding one IEM so I can adjust my own vocal level, this is great but means I have to leave one IEM out to hear the rest of the band, and if i put an ear plug in, I can't concentrate properly as the sound is too unbalanced. I could purchase custom plugs but would rather not spend that sort of money seeing as I have the other IEM dangling down my shirt...
The majority of the venues I've played have had foldback wedge monitors, usually on speaker connections (I guess?). Is it possible to use a speakon type connection for the monitor to XLR or Jack, into the DI box, kick a pad in, then out of the DI into my wireless or micromon so I can still control my own vocal level?
Also, as an engineer, would you be okay with someone swapping your cables over? I'd always ask and explain the situation of course... I usually ask if it's possible to get foldback straight to my wireless but it's only ever happened at the bigger venues I've played.
I have a BSS AR-133 and a cheap passive box already. If I haven't confused myself then I believe passive probably won't be able to handle that sort of level, would the BSS be okay? I quite like it so I don't want to risk wrecking it...
Thanks and sorry if I'm asking some obvious stuff!
Christian.
