Someone searching for a particular famous song can be directed to a cover of it by an unknown artist, and thus to said artist's own original material. Thus bringiong views/listens that wouldn't have occured by posting only their original stuff.

That's a good point. I found this cover of a Divine Comedy song by Daisy Chapman, Our Mutual Friend. She impressed me so much I bought both her albums and follow her career now with interest.
Though not an 'unknown artist' by any means, I became aware of Jacques Brel purely due to covers of his songs by Bowie and Scott Walker.
