Good music rendered unlistenable
      08/09/11 11:05 AM
Ok, so the first part of the title is subjective, but I wanted to know how many people have hit this problem: records where you really love the music, but the mastering has absolutely hammered it into oblivion and you can't listen casually for more than a few tracks.

Two of the worst offenders in recent times were Glasvegas (their debut album) and American Slang by The Gaslight Anthem. Both of these have been brickwall squeezed to the point where the drums lose all their power and percussive edge, and the guitars have no tone at all. They hurt to listen to! Some such albums can be made bearable by a little EQ, but these two are so thoroughly slammed that there's no room to move. Boys and Girls in America and Stay Positive by The Hold Steady are equally mushed. I wonder if the vinyl releases were from different masters?

Think of this thread as a place of mourning...
