Which Mic Pre for £500-ish...
      04/10/11 03:13 AM
I have a modest recording setup at home and am looking to buy a dedicated mic pre after realizing that both the Mackie VLZ3 and old Studiomaster P7 mixer I have been using for this purpose DO things to the sound that I'd rather avoid... The Studiomaster is not exactly quiet and lacks a certain crispness, but still sounds nice and musical in a way. The Mackie sounds cleaner and brighter but seems somehow... 'constricted' by comparison.

So I'm looking for a mic pre that offers best of both worlds. Basically, a neutral, clean, big and open sound! Will be used for vocal recording with the odd bit of acoustic guitar. I think I will be changing my main vocal mic too (from a Gemini 2 to, perhaps, a U87).

Have read about various contenders: Audient Mico, DBX 386, DAV Electronics BG1, Focusrite Isa One, True Systems P solo, Grace Design M101... Would be very interested if anyone has compared any of these and has a preference. Whatever I get will connect to my RME Multiface 2 btw.
