Trouble Importing Backing Tracks To BR 1600

I'm just getting to grips with my Boss portable recording studio but, even after reading through the manual and watching a DVD that a friend lent me, I'm having problems with the basic act of copying backing music to the hard drive and then using it to make a new track.

So far, this is as much as I can do: load the disc, using the controls on the right-hand side to choose audio and write, then using the onscreen instructions I import the tracks. The recorder tells me that it's importing them to Track 9/10 and it has up to 16 slots. However, once I've done this, I can only ever find one track. I'm clearly going about this all wrong...the question is, how do I go about it correctly?

Using pre-recorded backing tracks is an aspect that seems to be overlooked in the recording process, which is a bit annoying when you're "just" a singer like me!
