With regards the question of mics which don't cut through - I own a couple of Rode M2 condensers which have a pretty flat response. I work with a band in which the female lead vocalist can be a little harsh in the presence region, I've found that the Rode works very well to tame this compared to more typical vocal mics.

Not sure on exact price, but should def be under £100.
