There is no "the best" in any category, it's an over simplification.

The industry standard up to now has been Avid systems, particularly Media Composer, but Apple's FInal Cut Pro is also big in the indie film world and making significant inroads into Avid's market in general. Most films and most reality TV are edited on Avid systems.

Others include Adobe's Premiere Pro which is a much better product now than it used to me, with a few also rans like Sony's Vegas... There are plenty of others too...

be sure to checkout vegas video. there are demos you can download. i use a very old (Vers 3) copy to edit my vids and it works fine. 3rd party plugins no problem (newblufx, eg).
