Need a cheap USB soundcard, cheap, like CHEAP!

Postby schuey » Fri May 18, 2012 2:06 pm

So the most important thing here is cheap. I'm looking for a very basic soundcard for my Mac, running the latest OS, basically so I can get two outputs out of the Mac, just need two outputs, no inputs and that's it.

When I say cheap I do want it to actually make some sound when plugged in but as long as it does that then I'm happy :)

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry if its a daft question but do you need two stereo outputs? Or is it just two mono outputs that you want, in which case you'll have that with the stereo out.

At least, I think so - not used a mac in ages. Last I did they were sticking to the single mouse button, so maybe they're stubborn mono fans.

:) Actually what I'm trying to do is use some djing software on the Mac which needs to have a main output for the main mix and a headphone output for the headphone mix, if that makes sense :)

And the problem with the signal from the Mac soundcard is???? ;)

I need to listen to both sources individually. Am I being dumb, I can do that?

Are they sparate sources, or do you just need to split the Mac out signal?

They are, one is the headphone mix, which for example might be a song from the right 'turntable' and the other will be the full mix which is both left and right turntable.

Native Instruments Traktor Audio 2 is less than €100.
It's hard to think of anything with 4 outputs for much cheaper than that.
The MixVibes U-MIX 44, a 16 bit device, is around the same price.

Only actually need two outputs, was thinking of something like this http://www.dv247.com/computer-hardware/behringer-uca202-2-in-2-out-usb-audio-interface--32730

You are probably better off with four outputs; Numark do one called DJiO which might be fine for you. It has RCA connections though.

The one you linked to has only got two outputs = one stereo output. You need a four output interface to get two stereo outputs.

Actually the one you have posted is perfectly suitable.

You have 3!!! outputs on that sound card. There are 2 stereo outputs (so four mono outputs) on phono outputs and also a mini jack output for headphones, which will also be a stereo output.

However, having never used anything like that myself before, I have no idea whether the outputs are individually assignable.

If the design is there you will be able to get a separate mix in all three outputs, or if its a very basic design then it will just be one stereo audio signal feeding all three stereo outputs.

Dave

NO, I'M WRONG. PLEASE IGNORE MY TERRIBLE ADVICE.

Apologies here, yes it only has 1 stereo output and 1 stereo input. The headphone output will give the exact same output as the phono output.

Reloop Play has 4 outs + headphones. Also Novation Nio 2/4 has been discontinued so there may be some end of line bargains if you shop around.

Clinging on in quiet desperation is the English way. Well apparently not anymore it isn't.

^ My ESP 1010e seems ok so that probably is.

I THINK you have to be a bit wary with macs and usb.AFAIK any usb AI works with PC but not always with mac....But you REALLY would do a lot better with an NI KA6!

I'd go for the Native Instruments KA 2 (great convertors, tight drivers) but that's around £80. Cheaper than that I can only really think of the Numark DJIO or the Alesis io2 for about a tenner less and whilst they'll do the job I'd still prefer to work with the KA2 due to the previously mentioned reasons.

Ok great, thanks everyone, I'll probably take a look at the NI card, seems like a lot of money to be fair, oh well :)

In the scheme of things, £80 isn't that much. If you can make money out of DJing, that is a few hours work.

Ebay listing for £1.75 USB audio output.

I bought one of these and it just works when you plug it in. £1.75 seems cheap enough and it really does work!
