Postby sine220 » Sun Jul 20, 2008 3:42 pm

Hi,
I've just bought a TL audio C-5021 from ebay......and ive just noticed it is the original model.....not the MK2 upgraded model......can anyone tell me what the differences are? Does it still use nice valves etc...?

Thanks

review here.

"Now the new 5021 features hard and soft knee modes, four attack and release times, an improved optical gate design and an optional digital output."

TLA site.

I have the MK 1, which I use quite often.

Replace the valve with a new one and you will have a nice surprise. The valve will last maybe 2 years, gradually losing quality during that time.

excellent.....thanks for the reply!
I suspect it will be an old valve in this unit and I'll replace it soon.

Any recommendations on where to get new replacement valves? or which size/type is in the 5021?

Thanks for your help

I think you'll need more than one, I am just looking to upgrade the valves in my 5021mkII and looking at the schematics I think there are 4 valves, I suppose the original 5021 is the same.

Can anyone clarify how many valves there are in the 5021's?

I have looked around for valve suppliers and I cant find many, just watford valves and eBay so far.

I think it is also necessary to get a matched quad, particularly if you are going to use the 5021 as a stereo compressor as opposed to two mono. Does anyone know how important this is?

It (the mk 1) takes 2 12AX7's as discussed here.

I had two the same from Watford valves. I expect you need two the same if you are going to process stereo sources. You could use different ones if you want to process mono sources differently - then you would have two mono compressors rather than one stereo one.
