A break that never stops increasing in tempo? - The Risset Rhythm

Postby Syncratic » Wed Apr 21, 2010 9:28 pm

Hello all, I recently found this auditory illusion, which I though many of you would find interesting.

I'd be interested to hear how people think it has been created, or how it may be recreated. I'm fairly sure I've cracked it and just started trying to make my own, I'll let you know how it goes..

Thoughts?

Sounds like as the tempo increases a half tempo version of the loop fades in underneath, hence giving an infinite loop.

Pretty straightforward.

It didn't work out as well as the pitch one to my ears.

What's the point of a Shepard tone? What's the point of any optical illusion? It's just an interesting effect and one which someone, somewhere is probably already shaping to a musical end...

The Shepard Tone was used to great effect in the Fifth Element. If you modify the Pure Data example and control it with a Nintendo Wii it can produce some pretty awesome effects.

Pure data is a good idea, not sure if I'll manage to recreate it flawlessly but it's worth a try. I'll report back

Aah sorry

That would not be too hard to implement though it would take a while - MP's sampler examples could be raided to accomplish it. Sounds like too much work

Done! My version isn't pitch altered and so sightly different to the other example.
