I know an expander is a compressor in reverse but when you reverse a vocal and apply compression it yields different results and am wondering would that be regarded as expansion

No! It's a compressed reversed vocal!

An expander is not 'a compressor in reverse' in the timeline sense.

It is a dynamics processor with a 'reversed ratio', since where a compressor might have a ratio of 2:1, an expander might have a ratio of 1:2.

The direction!

Upward expansion expands the dynamic changes above the threshold. Downward expansion expands the dynamic range below the threshold.

Hugh

Meaning for downward expansion softer sounds below the threshold a made even quieter and for upward expansion sounds above the threshold a elevated 'ight
