UAD product advice needed

Postby charlie chalk » Tue Dec 04, 2012 6:35 pm

Hey peeps

I'm wondering if anyone has a particular recommendations regarding the plugins as I've just noticed they got a sale on

I currently own the UAD solo card and currently own the CS-1, LA-2A, 1176SE, pultec pro, cambridge eq, dream verb. all are great.

Aside from these I also have eq wise the psp noble Q. DAW wise I'm on PC and use cubase 6 and ableton 8 with all their in built plugins...

With regards to the UAD sale, I was thinking (due to budget) either a couple of nice compressors, or one of the channel strips. are there any particular recommendations anyone might have for any of the plugins? I've only got a bedroom studio and mainly work on hd 280 headphones.

I produce mainly dnb/ drum funk style stuff but delve into other electronic stuff when the mood hits...

I realize this is a bit of a vague thread...but I thought I'd have a go...

thanks people

there is a demo for each plugin, why don't you try them for yourself.. i mean, they're all good, for different things.

The plugins I like and use most often are, in no particular order, just off the top of my head..

1176
LA2A
Fairchild
Moog filter
Roland Space-Echo
Plate140
Cooper Time Cube
Fatso

I could easily go on and double that list...

I'm more into acoustic music, but for what it's worth my favourites would be:

Compression:
Fairchild
LA2A
LA3A

EQ:
1081
Pultec Pro
Cambridge/Oxford
Manley

Other:
Plate 140
Cooper time cube
Transient designer
Precision limiter

But as the Boss says give them a go.........

thanks bossman,

yeah I will, I'm just trying to work out what I'd benefit from the most as I've got plenty of effects plugins, great EQ's and obviously the 1176/la2a compressors all of which I can get the results I want; although we're always learning how to improve our sound!

This makes me think that the most obvious choice would be either a channel strip or one of the console bundles..

ahhh...decision.....

thanks again

Fatso would definitely be a contender, agreed, for your sort of music

Try it against the A800 tape emulation and the ATR tape emulation, you might find one of those three really gives you the fatness you want in your music that doesn't already come from any EQ or compression you've already got.

That or some Neve EQ or compressor or channel strip? They certainly add a certain something!

The studer a800 tape emulation completely changed my mixes. I'd be lost without that. Yes, the Fatso is good, too. Also, the Manley Massive Passive is one of the best Plugin EQs I've ever heard.

I really like the Moog filter. It is more than a filter as it has good gain stage, which can be used to good effect on a drum bus (well that is one way I use it). I bypass the filter part and drive the input which adds a certain something.

The filter is nice and it does more than just provide a low pass etc, it does some nice phasing effects.

When I had my UAD card up and running the plug-ins I made most use of were the Dbx 160, Harrison EQ and Plate 140. Those are the only ones I really miss (not that the others aren't great, but I have good alternatives for them).

I've now decided thats its a toss up between the fatso or one of the tape plugins. would love to have both but my budget wont let me :-(

thanks again all

Well if it is any consolation, they have an offer on something every month! Get the one with the biggest discount I reckon.
