Please help! Genelec 8020B vs. Focal CMS40 vs. KRK VXT4

Dear Forum

I'm attempting to buy my very first set of monitors and would be incredibly grateful for some advice on making my final decision.

Having spent a lot of time reading reviews on SOS I think I have narrowed it down to 3 monitors that fit (just about) within my £500 budget:

Genelec 8020B
Focal CMS40
KRK VXT4

I was also tempted by the KRK Rokit RP6 G2 which are pretty reasonable in price, but I've read from some experienced users that although these are great entry level monitors, after some time I'll most probably want to upgrade, so it's probably better to stretch my budget to the 3 I've shortlisted above.

I'd love to be able to create accurate, detailed mixes at home and wondered if any of you had experience with these monitors or even done some direct comparisons and could advise me which you think is the most neutral, telling me most accurately what my mixes really sound like.

The room I'll be using them in is fairly small: 2360mm X 2360mm x 2280mm with a big window taking up a healthy chunk of the outside wall.

If you had any advice or even set up tips that would be amazing.

Thanks so much for your time!

I have the CMS 50 FOCAL monitors and find them to be a quality piece of kit. Very well made, sturdy, accurate. I would highly recommend them. The CMS40's are a smaller version which should suit your small room admirably
I have no experience of the others :frown:

+1 on the Focals

I haven't used the 40s, but mixed a couple of tracks on the CMS65s and they were very agreeable. I read everywhere that the 40s have the same 'family sound', so you probably won't go wrong with those.

I'm in a similar position with the Genelecs. I have a pair of 8030a's and am very happy with them, so the 8020b's are likely to be pretty good too on a family sound basis, I should have thought. Haven't tried the others.

Incidentally I got the Genelecs second hand in very nice nick for £500 - your budget, of course.

When I heard a comparison a few years ago, the 8020's were very different sounding to the rest of the Genelec range. The 8030's were a big step up.

I'd agree that buying used will get you much more for your money as speakers don't tend to deteriorate unless you go for an older design with foam surrounds - but even these can be easily repaired.

Happy to stand corrected on that.

Thanks so much to all of you for taking the time to respond to my post.

I was very much swayed towards the Genelecs following your comments. However it was pointed out to me by an acoustics expert that my room is small and square and is pretty much worst case scenario for mixing!

For my budget it was suggested I invest in top quality headphones and something like an Avantone mix cube for mono listening and some wave analysis software.

If I had a decent well-treated room, I think I would go for the Genelec...but for the time being it might be back to the drawing board.

If any of you fine gentleman had any recommendations for monitoring headphones though I'd be most grateful :-)

But thanks again for your really helpful comments!

Take care

People 'round here tend to recommend three different sets of headphones :
Sennheiser HD650, AKG K701 and Beyer Dynamic 880 Pro

Me, I have the 880s and couldn't be happier.
Cheers,
Sam

Thanks Sam

Really appreciate your comments!

Yup, I've been doing my research and pretty much have a similar 3 on my shortlist: Shure SRH940, AKG702 and Sennheiser HD600.

All are similarly priced, around the £200 mark, and all have great reviews for use of mixing...so...my plan is to try that age old tried and tested method of picking a winner: let the missus choose the one she thinks looks the coolest!

Thanks again!

No problem.

As with anything and everything, try them out for yourself and choose the ones you're most comfortable with that best fulfill your needs.

Be aware that the AKG701 is exactly the same headphone as the 702 except for being a different colour and cheaper!
