Help needed- bassdrum NYC/parallel issue

Postby slightly » Mon Mar 25, 2013 9:53 pm

I'm starting off a new track and
I have my bassdrum channel,
I'm sending this(logic 8) to aux 1,
The bd channel is mono & aux 1 is mono.

on the aux 1 I have inserted soft tube
Tube tech compresser as I like that comp.

Now, I'm using my ears here as I go;
On the aux 1 mono compresser,
I've low threshold -30 setting
And ratio of 9.2
This is looking at control view(as I like more control)
I'm pretty sure the -30 setting is actually also
Db, but it's a really low threshold I've set..

I've my attack(manual) really fast,
And a really slow release.

When anytime I stop the loop of bd
And repress play there's a short click
Emphasis of the first bassdrum beat and
Then all is grand,
I've messed around with long attack long
Release & long attack short release
I'm sure I've tried short attack short release too,
All just trying to keep what I'm liking but
Irradiate this "intro" bd click when compresser
Sets in,
Any advise here with what's causing this
And what exactly I need to do to fix this
Thanks

anyone, would like this resolved as its a fresh tune, and this is a stumbling block before picking up any speed....

looked again at attack release of the aux1 mono parallel compresser:
it seems I'm on right track using a very short atack and long release on the aux Parallel compresser for bassdrum,
but as said, when the tune is at stop and I hit play there a "click" emphasis to the first beat on bassdrum

in the mean time I'll try it with some other compresser but I hate rethreading covered ground re: the setup and likeability bar this issue Ive done with the parallel style compression for bassdrum..

I suspect that the release time is so long that once into the track the gain reduction is never released, and so subsequent attacks are only adding partially to the overall gain reduction. it is therefore probably the first initial attack that is setting a huge amount of gain reduction, and that is causing an audible transient distortion which you hear as a click.

Slowing down the attack time would probably help as it would reduce the amount of transient distortion. Raising the threshold and using less compression might also be worth a try ... although that will then also affect the strength of the whole parallel compression thing.

A different compressor algorithm (especially one with a look-ahead function) might work better in this context, too.

Thanks Hugh,
as I'm currently demoing nebula lite
, I first chose this to try it with a different
Compresser, I kinda killed to birds with
One stone as my observation was it
Was vastly superior sounding, trying
One of the free compressers &
and my issue was gone, though the attack
Was prob like u suggested slower, because
Default was slowest attack and I worked it back
From there, so thankfully "going" again,
I will bear in mind what u have described
For the future
Thanks
