Best way to slow down YouTube audio

Postby One Horse Town » Mon Sep 09, 2013 1:17 pm

In trying to master tricky sections/identify chords etc I need to slow down mp3 audio from YouTube. I currently use a Yamaha Pocketrak personal recorder and it works....to a point. On slower playback the audio (already compromised because of the original live gig recordings) becomes really bad.
Two questions: Which is the best mp3 sampling rate to use - the recorder gives a choice - 128k?
Is there a better/higher quality way to do this?
Cheers

To get the best quality, use an app that allows you download YouTube video, extract the audio from the video.

Then manipulate the speed.

mp3 is a compressed format, I would not record to that format.

Thanks, can you recommend a specific app to do this. I'm not an expert on this - also, what host device/options are available given that I need to do this with an instrument as I watch.

freemake downloader is my current fave (I'm a PC user). I've had no reason to separate the audio from video but I seem to remember that function is included. It can be incorporated into the Firefox browser so you can do a "one touch" download without the programme actually being open.

Variable playback without pitch change is then easy with Reaper.

I don't know much but I'm happy to share my ignorance with anyone who can use it.

Riffstation might be worth a look. You can slow down your mp3s, isolate the guitar solos and have the software automatically recognize the basic chords of the song. There is still some room for improvement in the chord recognition department.
