Monitor Crossroads. Neumann? Focal?

Postby frozenfox » Wed Feb 26, 2014 1:36 am

Greetings,

I am at a crossroads regarding monitor selection; having moved half way around the world. These monitors will be used purely for mixing and mastering.

I was previously a PMC TB2 user and a very happy one at that. I had to sell them for the move. They are also very difficult to get hold of in the USA.
Therefore after deliberating and researching for an extensive period i had settled on the Neumann K120 retailing for $1500, after a multitude of favorable reviews. Now my budget isn't restricted to this price range.
I have also been pointed toward the Focal Solo6 BE, but the price on these is much higher $2700.

I must state, as most people are i guess, after the most neutral monitor. No colouring etc.

So i guess my questions are thus:

Are the Focal Solo6 BE worth the extra money? Some reviews have suggested they dont sound neutral especially in the high end? Are the Focal Solo6 BE as revealing as the PMC TB2 are?

My room is relatively small and i mix varying styles.

Many thanks in advance

Why not look at the bigger Neumanns?

Thanks guys

The bigger Neumanns are out of my price range, i would be looking around $4500 which is too large an outlay.

I have compared the KH120's with the Focal CMS65 and ended up going with the Neumann's. Both are very good monitors but I felt the Neumann's had a little better stereo imaging and detail.

At that price range - Neumann KH120A - for double the price, there is the ME-Geithain RL906 (that I use) - but I don't know of anything in-between them that I would go for.

So, unless you can afford the big jump, I would stick with the KH120A.
