What is the limiting plugin du jour ?

Postby SecretSam » Mon Aug 18, 2014 1:27 pm

I used to stick finished tunes through a limiter from Elemental Audio/RND/RNDigital/whatever. Anyway, some American {lady-part} got involved in the company and crashed it, so now I am looking for a 64-bit replacement.

What I liked about the old EA/RND gadget was that it made things louder in a not-too-obvious way, and I only had to poke three buttons and wiggle three sliders to make it go.

What is the lazy man's limiter of choice these days ?

I like Fabfilter Pro-L - really simple and transparent.

Many people swear by the Sonnox limiter too.

+1 for both, but esp. Fabfilter, which is visually so very useful and intuitive.

(The UAD limiter is also very easy to use, but obviously you wouldn't buy a UAD card just for that!)

Different ones seem to perform better on different sources. Fabfilter and Sonnox are the best all rounders, IMO. But UA Precision, Melda, iZotope Ozone... these are all good. Plus a vote for a freebie: VladG Limiter No6. It's not three knobs but it's damned good! Not tried the Massey Jack mentioned...

I like the Flux Pure Limiter v3. Works great on the mix bus/mastering (depending on where you apply your loudness), but can also be great on individual instruments/voice. I'd recommend it. I've also got an L1, but the Pure Limiter just makes it easy and I have to really push it too hard for it to start to sound harsh.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

A lot of those are new to me. The answer a couple of years ago would have been PSP Xenon, so things have clearly moved on. Now for a bit of demo-ing.

Top blokes, all of you.

I'm still using the PSP Xenon

It may not achieve absolute maximum loudness (although thankfully the loudness wars seem to be cooling down a little, so this is perhaps less important), but it's still a wonderfully transparent 'mastering' limiter to my ears 8-)

It also has an Auto output mode switch, which alters output level in real time to match that of the input (even while altering the amount of limiting). You can thus perform quick A/B comparisons between original and limited audio using the Bypass button, to hear any compromise in dynamics as you make your music louder.

I'm still really impressed by this since my Xenon review in SOS August 2008:

The Massey limiter's not VST, though, so if that's what you need, the Massey is out.
