Public Liability Insurance

Postby SwingKing » Wed Jan 23, 2013 1:15 pm

Can anyone please provide a recommendation regarding the best place to go with for Public Liability Insurance? I'm a solo singer so there's just me to worry about.

Many thanks.

If you're UK based join MU http://www.musiciansunion.org.uk/. Public liability insurance is part of the membership benefits.

From MU website:

"Insurance schemes

Members are insured for legal liability of £10m, to cover injury to members of the public or damage to property. You also get instrument and equipment insurance up to £2,000, Personal Accident cover and tax investigation cover. NEW: Members have access to Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme from just £50 a year (plus £5 admin fee)."

Thanks but I don't want to join. If they offered PLI on its own then I might consider it; it's all the other stuff that comes with joining that I don't want.

So, I'm presuming then that everyone on here who has PLI has it through the MU or doesn't have it at all then?

You can ignore their other services and activities. The only question is whether the subscription ia a competititive price for £10M PLI.

Even if it does also currently fund a project on LGBT musicians in the workplace. Highly valuable I'm sure. But why am *I* paying for it?

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, dont. Go fishing instead.

Thanks all. I'll try Simply Business and see what the cost is with them. Having said that, since first asking the question I'm reconsidering my initial reluctance to get insurance through the union. I've always believed in the unions, whatever job I've been doing, so I think it's in my best interests to be in one now that I'm s/e.

I was with Simply Business, but for some reason, their quote trebled for no apparent reason. I got a far better deal with musicguard. It sounds like it would be ideal for you.

Resurrecting this thread as the topic has raised it's head in my universe and I should really know about this stuff. I have a few questions that I'm hoping the wise around here can answer :

1. Can anyone recommend a good supplier of PLI for _bands_ ?

2. How much is a typical PLI premium for a 5 piece band?

3. Is it correct that the MU automatic PLI only covers the member and not the band?

4. Lastly, is is possible for an individual to take out PLI that would cover any (named?) band(s) that he might play in?

Cheers

I suppose the elephant in THIS room is "politics" and naturally no one wants such debates in the pages of SoS.

But can anyone seriously think we would be where we are now with workplace safety, equality, job protection, redundancy law (such as it now is!) WITHOUT the unions?

Look at how "they" squealed stuck pig about minimum wage!
