Most likely a hard drive failure.
Try the restart disc - it maybe that it can't find a disc to install onto - meaning the hard drive has gone awol.

Hope I'm wrong, but that's my bet. New hard drive time.

2 things

1) OS is corrupted ( no not a virus but a genuine glitch )
2) HD is corrupted. possibly died.

Boot with these keys "

Apple Alt P R

let it chine 3 times ( ie keep holding them all down.)

If it wont boot then, boot with just the alt key.
This brings up the boot menu, ie the bootable devices it can see.
If your HD is missing, put in your OS DVD and refresh the list with the arrow.
Boot from DVD ( by clicking on it) and run disk utilities from the Utilities menu

If there are lots of red text, effect repairs.
If you cant get rid of the red text, consider your back up options, because you may have to format the HD.
You can back up with another mac and boot this one with Apple + T, for target disk mode. Connect the two macs via FW. ( do that on a PC ! )
Copy your home folder.

Boot from DVD & try a re-install over the top of your current OS.
If that fails, format and install.
If that fails buy a new HD, yours is fried.

Good luck.

Replacing the hard drive in a Macbook is easy-peasy and should cost £30-£50 depending on capacity.

Take the opportunity to upgrade to a larger capacity 7200rpm drive.

If you have a Time Machine backup, you'll be up and running in no time.

Regards

when you do get the hard drive replaced might be a good time for anything else getting old. I'm thinking dvd drives.

I made the mistake on my iMac of not replacing my dvd drive (which I knew was getting tired) whilst I had the hard drive replaced. Now I need to have another repair. Not urgent as it can still read discs, can't burn though. Just burns me!
