Multiple firewire needs from a single port?

Postby Lucky Sam » Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:07 am

Hi all

Very tempted by an imac for home studio set up but have a soundcard / uad / controller keyboard that all require firewire. Just one FW port on the imac. At the risk of asking the worlds most stupid question, is there a firewire adapter that does a 4 from 1 kind of thing and if so would these kind of devises be happy running on such a set up?

Many thanks

Sam

You can chain Firewire devices. Just make sure that the FW800 devices come first in the chain and any FW400 devices are at the end.

Remember, having more ports doesn't make the bus faster, so forcing more stuff down the same pipe means there's less room for everything else...

Apart from acting as a repeater for long cables and maybe boosting the power-down-Firewire capability, does this offer any functional advantage over daisy-chaining?

You don't have to write songs. The world doesn't want you to write songs. It would probably prefer it if you didn't. So write songs if you want to. Otherwise, dont. Go fishing instead.

"And what else have the Romans ever done for us?" !!

Do all FW devices have two ports then and are they all universally daisychainable (is that a proper word?)
this http://cpc.farnell.com/kouwell/582-h6/hub-firewire-5-port/dp/CS21401 is considerably cheaper but only FW400.

Some devices don't behave well when daisy-chained, a hub eliminates that issue.

I use a hub on my quad MBP, currently have three hard drives and MOTU 828 connected without any issues.

There are also the first glimmerings of Thunderbolt -> Firewire adapters so now is a relatively good time to buy and iMac.
