Specific Hard Drive Recommendations Please...!

Postby siderealxxx » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:09 pm

I need an external Audio drive for traveling with my Macbook. My requirements are:

FW400
7,200rpm
1TB (or at least 600GB)
Maybe compact, or at least sturdy (i.e. for traveling)
RELIABLE!

I'm actually having real trouble finding something that fits the bill! The Lacie Rugged do a model but it is only 5,400rpm unfortunately. Also, prefer Seagate drives, but I'm open to negotiation. Are there encolsures available if I source the drive?

Thanks

So it turns out the Lacie Rugged 1TB is not actually 7,200rpm but 5,400rpm (Amazons mistake it seems).

So now I'm back in the game for the above... would consider a 500GB option, but FW400, 7,200rpm and vaguely portable are a must!

Really appreciate any thoughts on this...

Thanks

Thanks - hadn't seen this one... I have had 2 Iomega drives go dead on me though so was generally avoiding them but might consider it as there are so few options for some reason! Any other thoughts welcome :-)

Remember that most of these caddies contain drives from other companies, so it might be the drive that has failed rather than the caddy. You could get a caddy and put a drive in yourself of course.

They usually come with a FW800 to FW400 cable. It's better to have a Fw800 port, because then you get both, whereas a FW400 port only gives you FW400.

... this has only just dawned on me!

I assume you can still provide bus power over FW400-800 converter?

Thanks, this opens the options up... and yes I might well get a caddy and drive of my choice instead...
