256GB SSD large enough?

Postby Mike7 » Tue Dec 11, 2012 12:16 am

I am considering a La Cie Rugged 256GB SSD drive with Thunderbolt connection and anticipate loading it with EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Plus Complete (194GB) and EWQL Symphonic Choirs (38 GB). Together, the two sample libraries would take up virtually all of the available storage. I understand that hard drives generally work best when there is a reasonable amount of "empty space" remaining on the drive but am unclear how significant an issue this is. In the circumstances, I wonder if loading 232GB of samples on a 256 GB SSD and using them with Logic Pro 9 or Sibelius 7 on a MacBook Air sounds like a workable plan?

Hi Mike

For a system drive it is important to leave some spare space so that the OS can use space for a swap file.

For a connected drive, it shouldn't be necessary to leave any space.

PC numpty here. I think that is true so long as it is just "data" on the drive? Any kind of program could cause problems I seem to have read.

Thanks. However, I would limit my use of the drive to the two sample sets only so hopefully that should be OK.

Dave, I see that the drive comes loaded with programs to assist with set up and backup and it would probably be best to leave them there although they would likely be mostly unused. Hopefully these should not cause problems?

They will not cause problems as you won't be using them. Even if you were to, they're likely to be programs installed on your system partition/disk, hence not a problem either.

Note that a 256GB drive will give you around 238GB of actual space.

Thanks. My two sample sets total 232 GB so I won't have much unused space!

A long as you're using them just to hold the sound samples which will be read, you will be fine. Even with only 6gb left. I went through a similar situation myself a while back, hence why I know it shouldn't be a problem.
