Recommend Software for a G4 PPC Macbook

Postby NikTesla » Wed Mar 20, 2013 8:55 pm

I have got hold of a G4 PPC macbook, 1.3ghz 1GB ram. I very much like the lightness and strudiness of the body and was looking forward to using it specifically for keyboard music duties. I have no wish to use this laptop for anything else, just for playing soft synths/samples with controller keyboard. This seems like a modest demand. I remember years ago back in college the music studio there ran off a pentium 2 and was very stable, even with wave files.

But I am having trouble finding anything to install on it. I have been looking for an older version of Logic with no avail. All the ones I come accross seem to be intel only. What other software is out there that I could use for synths/samples and basic mainly midi sequencing?

The macbook book came with OS 10.5.8 installed on it. I am not sure if this is even stable on it, as even Safari seems to freeze up when I try to use the internet.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I've just got one myself and it's great.
A 12" PowerBook 1.33GHz.
Logic 7 & GarageBand 08 are fine but you'd
be better off with running it all on
10.4.11 Tiger.

I have similar setup (though a 15" 1.33, with Logic 8 & Sibelius 3) and use Tiger 10.4.11. Its stable and works well for my needs as a classical recording musician, with occasional forays into Drum and Bass. I bought the full version of Logic last year off eBay for 99p!
One advantage is that I could purchase really good soundcard hardware very cheaply because it was being discarded (didn't have drivers for later OSX).
Your biggest limitation will be on what software instruments you can use, and how much polyphony you'll get. The Arturia synths tend to be limited to being monophonic (like their originals ), the Logic synths, organs etc vary, though I find the Logic EXS sampler works well on that spec Powerbook as long as you have got optimum RAM installed and use the 32bit versions of the samples.
Good luck with the music making! Glenn

Cubase SX 3 should run on it. I agree that you should go back to 10.4; I found 10.5 made my G4 mirror door run slower.

I've just installed Absynth 2 and it runs without issues.

Reaper is PPC compliant and is fairly light on CPU.

Logic 7, Protools 5, 6, & 7
Cubase 2 & 3
Reason ( possibly the most bang for your buck)
Peak ( Stereo Editor )
All run quite happily on a G4 & most are going to be dirt cheap to buy these days.

Avoid any Native Interments as they will melt your CPU
( I crucified my dual G5 with "Massive" )

Reaper.

But try to get more RAM. 1gb is fine for low-demand apps but sound manipulation needs more horsepower.

If you don't need to run audio, then the most efficent music program you get get for running Synths would be an old version of Reason.. version 5 or earlier should run on a G4 and you'll be able to run many more instances of synths and samplers and because early Reason doesn't run an audio engine, has to be the most stable software ever as well..

Ableton Live 7 is running well on mine now.
There's a lot of choice out there, so best of luck getting the right release.
Enjoy.

I am running Logic 9.0.2 on my g4 laptop with OS X 10.5.8 and it works well! But I did have to change the hard disk last year because the original died (it was 9 years old).
