4u Rackmount Cases and Power Supplies... which do you use?

Postby Andy McBain » Tue Jun 26, 2012 5:41 pm

Hi all!

I'm looking to build a music PC from scratch. Components I'm in the midst of researching... just need some recommendations on a case and power supply- budget £100ish for the case, and however much it's going to cost for the power supply - 650 watt.

Obviously there are loads of choices for these - but as it's a music PC, quiet fans would be nice. I'm thinking 4u rackmount as I've got 4 units left in my rack - and it'll save a bit of floorspace.

What's everyone else using in their builds?

Many thanks!

I use a PaQ rackmounted case. If you could stretch your budget a bit (quite a bit), I would certainly recommend them. http://www.paqt.co.uk/index.html

Case/PSU/cooler/rackmounts bundle = £276.00

Wow - they look lovely. Though that's a little out of my budget as you say. I can imagine that's a fairly silent rig though?

Anyone else got any suggestions?

I've got a Paq case as well, and the transformer buzz from one of my rack-mounted power amps is louder than the remaining noise from my PC

I'm using a generic 4u case at the moment, one thing to watch out for is cpu cooler size. If you're planning something that will need significant cpu cooling be aware the largest coolers won't fit. On my case the limit is a height measurement of about 150mm.

I ended up using a thermolab trinity on my i5 2500k @ 4.7Ghz, it works well but can be heard if the machine is working hard.

Hope this helps
