USB v's FireWire audio interface

Postby Geordie John » Sun Jan 12, 2014 12:06 pm

Are there any real advantages to FireWire? Can you use a USB interface through a powered hub? Anyone using the motu hybrid devices? Any opinions welcomed. Many thanks.

Its pretty close these days, so not really. Good USB drivers will give you performance that is more than usable.

Its advisable that you don't. Extra layer for it to work through (and perhaps add latency) mean that its less than ideal. I'm pretty sure all the interface companies explicity say you should connect directly too the system.

Decent drivers on both connections and great signal path. Can be a bit picky on the FW side (it prefers Texas Instruments chipsets... but then what FW doesn't) but the USB implimentation is solid in my experience.

Do you want to do eventually do more than a couple dozen simultaneous i/o's?
Or do you want to have multiple external drives on one chain?
If so, go Firewire.

If not, usb2 is fine.

My experience with Firewire is it is more trouble than it's worth. My FW interface only ever worked properly on one of the three PCs I tried it out with, despite all three having TI chipsets (one built in, two cards - it was one of the cards that worked). I've never had any bother with USB.

My experience is 180 degrees different!

I never had a moment's problem with Firewire (all of my desktop PCs have a Lacie FW800 card installed), but I've fought all sorts of USB-related problems.

Firewire is pretty much moribund, but for myself I'll continue to choose it until the choice disappears completely!
