3/4 Size Electric Guitar recommendations?

Postby mc23 » Thu Jul 28, 2011 11:22 am

My son would like an electric guitar - he's quite musical and
so I'm hoping to help. I'm not a guitarist - so have no experience.

- I think if I can get him something "better" it will make
it more playable and therefore he might learn more?

So, of the three-quarter scale electric guitars - are there
some better ones, or does anyone have any recommendations?

Many Thanks
- Mike

Hi Mike,

Playing a musical instrument is always a good thing, so lets see what we can do to help.

First of all, how old is your son? If he's very young then a 3/4 sized instrument could be ideal, but there's a lot to be said for starting him off with a full size electric if he's big enough (or soon will be).

Although the neck seems very long for short arms, you can easily place a capo at the 5th or 6th fret. That would reduce the scale length to around that of a 3/4 size instrument so fingering is easier for small hands. But as he grows up and gets more experienced he can move the capo back a fret at a time until he is playing the full scale.

The benefits are that you have a lot more choice of quality starter guitars, and you don't have to buy a new guitar in a year or two when he's sprouted so much that he's taller than you!!

Whether you are buying a 3/4 or full scale guitar, it's always best to take a guitar playing friend along with you. Although there are some reputable makes, when you are at the entry level there can be a lot of variation between individual guitars. The only way to get a good one is to play a few, so take your tame expert

I'm sure they'll be more advice to come

Thank you for your reply.

The capo idea is good/great and then as you suggest opens
up the selection to "proper instruments" rather than
toys from the high street.

I was thinking that I would try to learn too - and was
looking at a Yamaha Pacifica/112 which people seem to
(for the money) say nice things about - so this could
double-up and the shared guitar?!

Many Thanks

Hi Mike,

Indeed this would make a very good comprise for both you and him.
The reason they are so well recommended is that they generally have good quality control, they also use parts that complement eachother, eg; whilst not being the best individually, work well together and implement that to give a consice let's say "generic" sound quite well,
Be sure to heed Zen's advice of taking an experienced guitarist to test it out if possible as "dogs" are around no matter which brand it is! But a great yard stick for sure.

I'm sure we had a similar thread running fairly recently & also one regarding tuning issues for short scale guitars, both of which would be of interest to you. I've tried a quick search and can't turn up either right now but I'm sure if you trawl through the GT section you'll find them.

And of course there must be something wrong. In wanting to silence any song.

And yes, we often recommend the Yamaha's here, at every price point. They might not always be the best for you, but they make an excellent reference to compare the rest against.

And if you get the chance to learn too, that's even better

Thank you all for your replies & help!

I'll have a search for the tuning/capo/short scale
posts and have a read.

Yamaha - great, I'll go and have a closer look.

Cheers
