J.J. Cale Has Gone to the Great Gig in the Sky.

Hi all,

Just read that J.J. Cale has passed away. Truly a great songwriter but an even greater player. I have a DVD of him in 1979 "In Session at the Paradise Studios" (kind of apt, now that I think about it ;-) and his playing was a revelation to me the first time I watched it. I had a bunch of his albums but I'd never seen him in person. Soulfull and not a trace of A.O.S. (Acute Overplaying Syndrome). Plus his guitar was truly the most beat up P.O.S. (Piece of, well, you know) and it just showed yet again that it's never the gear, it's who wields it.

RIP, JJ ....

Damn! We used to say he was so laid back he was horizontal. We played Magnolia recently. We nearly fell asleep playing, with smiles on our faces. Then the singer said "we're gonna slow things down now"...
I'd been thinking about him a lot recently. How he did his thing, his way.
Damn...

One of the great. His music will live on - that's one of the good things of making music.

"..mama don't allow us no guitar playin' round here
I don't care what mama don't allow
I'll play my guitar anyhow.."

with instruments cuing in accordingly. Subzero cool.

An absolute great in my opinion
I love his guitar playing too - same root as neil young. i.e. instinctive intelligence

I love the fact that neil young used to say that the 2 greatest electric players for him were jimi hendrix and jj cale.

RIP

Wow, you could hardly pick two guitarists with such different styles although both shared a certain sensitivity.
Listening to After Midnight right now and the bass alone is a keeper.
