I've tried jazz style peerless, not that 335-ish. I'd put them at the same level than the cheap tokais. nothing special really (they look lovely though)

Dr Huge,
Peerless are very good. I've got a Peerless Wizard (a bit like a thinline ES-5, with three
P90 alikes) Sounds great and is very comfortable to play. Very good value for money in the lower-mid price bracket.

Whereas to me that shape just looks wrong.

I think it's good when other makers don't just try and make an exact copy of a famous model. Psychologically you don't feel 'oh I'm just getting a cheapo version of what I really want'. Or not quite so much, anyway.

I think this is one of the reasons I like my Yamaha 'teles'. They're clearly designed to fulfil the same sonic role but have the controls in different places, different body shapes and sizes, different radii etc.

You'd like my website then! http://www.yamahapacifica.com/

Meanwhile, I played an Epiphone ES339Pro today. Nice guitar, much better quality than my old Casino. But most shockingly, I picked up a Gibson 335 and was shocked how incredibly similar it felt to the Epiphone. The difference was nowhere near what a price differential of £2400 might suggest.

I'm glad you said that first as that was my impression too. :) Like I said, it did seem to be a lot of guitar for the money and knocked spots off of all the Casinos I tried. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they ever did a left handed version.

And even that PRS which is a long way from what I was thinking of when I started the thread. THe ES339Pro has even made me reconsider Epiphones. Gibson Midtown... aaaaaaagh!
What makes it worse is that I currently have an extremely healthy bank balance. In reality every penny is accounted for & destined to be spent sensibly. But I am so weak...the only thing that's saving me from myself is that I can't make my mind up which one I want the most.

Easy, buy the one that's most different to your others. Even better buy two and give one to me
I'm not picky.

Funny how a nice looking body can be wrecked by a klonky headstock. Goes for guit-boxes and women.

I agree entirely. I know it was probably meant as a witty off-the-cuff comment, but the reality is that it is denigrating women, and that kind of casual sexism is not appropriate in the main forums. Enough said I think.

I'd soon have that stripped down and rebuilt and playing like a dream. Sadly it's nothing like a 335 so I'll pass. Nice colour, though.

I have one of the Harley Bentons. It's not a bad instrument, but you can see where it has been built to a price.

Mine came with a pick guard that looked like it had been cut by a gibbon on a Friday afternoon after one too many of whatever gibbons drink on a Friday lunch time. This isn't an issue for me as I was going to remove it anyway.

The fingerboard is a little rough although I don't feel it.

Sound is good, although I do need to get it setup properly.

Mine can be played quite loud without feeding back.

I did wonder why I chose gibbon, I'd normally say chimp. My subconscious has a sense of humour!

I watched the review you posted above and I pretty much agree with everything the guy says. This is a decent guitar for the price. I used mine as my primary instrument at my last gig.

Longjohns - you are a very bad person who is leading me astray :madas:

I've just sold some underutilised gear, including a guitar, and I'm now having improper thoughts about this https://www.thomann.de/gb/fret_king_fkv3htsb_elise.htm?ref=search_prv_8 when I should be using the money to pay for the floor controller, which I already bought, and to renew my gym membership which expires in May.

If I now turn into a fat b***ard with a semi-solid that I don't really need - then it's all your fault.

Going to the gym will never bring true happiness. And you're quite likely to do yourself a mischief. On the other hand, playing a beautiful guitar can bring nothing but joy, peace and tranquility into your life. And it won't make you smell.
