Help with awkward room!

Postby copey12 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 7:03 pm

Hello all, I've recently moved into a new house and would like to set up a basic studio in a bedroom. I've got a big room but its an awkward shape so wondered if anyone could suggest where I should set up my monitors for the best mix position?
Hopefully a basic diagram should appear below....

Hi copey12, and welcome to the SOS Forums! 8-)

Oooh, that's not an easy space is it? :headbang:

Years ago I would have attempted to set up my monitors either side of that window, so that I had an outside view in front of me to look at. However, after the experience in my current small studio doing this, I found the flatness of the frequency response (even before adding any acoustic treatment) was significantly better below a couple of hundred Hz by firing the loudspeakers down the longer room dimension.

So, in your case I suspect that placing your loudspeakers on the 2.55 metre wall (rhs of your diagram) would probably give the best results, keeping each one the same distance from the 'top' and 'bottom' walls and placing your listening spot half way across the room.

Thanks Martin, much appreciated! I now have to win an argument about a wardrobe and a sofa bed :)

Just try to keep their positions vaguely symmetrical about the 'loudspeaker firing axis'

Would the sofa bed fit into that alcove on the 'left hand' wall? (i.e. at the back of your listening space)

Yes it would, the wardrobe is the more problematic item!

You could always give your clothes away, and then you wouldn't need a wardrobe - music is far more important!
