Name that tune... can anyone recognise these piano chops?

Postby feline1 » Fri Apr 14, 2017 5:29 pm

This is really niggling me -
here's a link to late 19th century French composer Gabriel Fauré's Impromptu for piano solo No.3 in A-flat (op.34)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBKV4M-qbcQ

As with most Fauré, it's a nice pleasant piece, but what especially struck me are the very first two bars, the mellow jiggling tenor-register groove he has going (it comes back a couple of times later on) -
I swear I recognise this, as being the main hook of what I imagine is so 70s/80s US piano ballad americano-rock hit ... or some 90s/noughties TV show theme tune ... ?
Does it sound familiar to anyone else? It's not something I have in my own record collection but I'm sure I recognise it off the radio!

Nah come off it.
It'll someone I've seen on a late-night BBC4 clip show of 'American songwriters of the 70s' or something like that, I'll bet.

Awkward!!!!!

Feline....a lot of late 70's/early 80's Sunday teatime stuff started with obligatory piano arpeggio-overload. 'All Creatures Great and Small' is the nearest I can come up with.

Nah, a friend of mine on Facebook suggested the same thing - I can see what you mean with the theme tune of All Creatures Great and Small, as it has a similar style of rhythmic figure, but what I'm talking about is a song or theme tune that uses the SAME rhythmic piano figure as it's main hook.

First thought was Keith Jarret but that's not what you're thinking. I hate it when a tune is just out of reach.

yeah there are certainly Keith Jarrett things that have a sunshine vibe like that... but I'm sure there's some kinda California hippyish ballad that uses it

lol nice try, but (unless I'm entirely imagining this entire thing) it's used basically as is, at the same tempo Fauré had it.

If you syncopated it, it would be similar to a Kate and Anna McGarrigle tune on their Heart Like a Wheel album. Also reminds me of Carol King, but I can't name a tune.

"Against stupidity we are defenseless."  - ascribed to poor old Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who felt defenseless against stupidity

the Allman Brother's 'Jessica' intro certainly *is* a bit like it, although I'm not 100% convinced, because I feel sure I heard a tune that does it on piano, not on geetars

The first thing that popped into my head was the theme from Cheers. It's not that obviously but I know what you mean about it being something of that ilk.
That's now going to bug me.

aye, the theme tune to something like 'Cheers' is also a distinct possibility (although as you say, it's not actually 'Cheers', clearly) - but some kind of 'feel good' americana theme tune with a glossy Bruce Hornsby piano thing could quite possibly be the culprit...

just suggesting that you might be getting to that age like me, where tunes start to run together! Not saying that we are old, mind you, just the mind is taking creative liberties!
:geek:

It may even be part of a tune that you wrote many years ago and that's why it resonates.

No, and now all I'm thinking of after listening to Bob Segar is "America, F*ck Yeah!"

I think you're a genius. You've obviously entered a higher level of consciousness where your ability to synthesise (see what I did there?) the mindset of eminent composers such as Faure, is enabling you to prepare for compositional legacies far beyond our comprehension.
Apparently Ed Sheeran has similar experiences.

Hmm, well, see what you can find!
I'm still sure there is some 70s tune that pinches it wholesale!
But so far we've all basically drawn a complete blank.

I thought 'Jessica' too but then I thought it was more similar to the piano intro to 'Ozark' by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays.
