Power Amp selection for PA system (500w FOR 8 OHMS)

Postby gogi » Tue Dec 24, 2013 8:59 pm

Hello Folks. I own one QSC GX5 power amp (500W for 8ohms both channels and 700 W for 4 ohms both channels driven). I am attracted to this amp because it matches my current Yamaha S115 mains speakers and JBL S118 subs. Most importantly it has a simple crossover switch that allows me run the mains and subs in crossover mode without using a crossover unit.

I need to buy another amp to achieve the same effect (i.e. I need the inbuilt crossover switch) but have a low budget as the QSC GX5 amp aint cheap. Can someone recommend some more affordable power amp with similar features i.e. 500W for 8 ohms/700 W for 4 ohms /AND BULT IN CROSSOVER SWITCH???

TBH the QSC QX5 looks pretty reasonably priced at around £330, I doubt there's a better quality amp with the features you require for the price.

I know that some of the Peavey amps have crossover options but the crossovers are additional plug-in modules. They probably aren't any cheaper than the QSC either. I've had good experiences when using the GX range so I'd echo the advice to find another one.

I'd add that if you plan to use them for left and right channels of a PA you'd be better off having two matching amps.

Just bought a Yamaha P2500S.
Very pleased with it.

Even though it only delivers 250W in to 8ohms rather than the 500W that you wanted?
