Allan and Heath ZED 60 - 10 FX

Postby Chris Barlow » Sun Sep 23, 2012 9:59 am

Well here it is folks the new upgrade to the legendary zed 10FX
Only just out so i snatched one up and used it at one of my gigs .

This is the older Zed 10FX :

This is the new Zed 60-10 fx :

ok i own both these products and they are brilliant .
The TWO MAJOR changes to the new zed are .
1 : FADERS !!! yaaaaayyyy
2 : seperate channel MUTES .

These was the 2 major things that put me off using the zed 10fx .

We have the same effects processor , same excellent mic pre outs , same SIZE.
I LOVE this mixer , u get all the benefits of the award winning zed 10FX but with the mutes and sliders .
What is not to like about this mixer ... well i have 2 things :

1. Effects .. being a solo cabaret performer for 20 + years effects are a major importance and my dynacord cms 1000 was SWEET for this, the ZEDs is just OK at best ! the question i have was is the downgrade in effects on the zed worth it :
my answer was yes bearing in mind :
a: the dynacord was 1200 quid compared to zed £249
b: The size and weight of the dynacord was way to big for 2 channels that i use !
the small sacrifice of lesser quality effects was a fair one IMO .

2. THE PRICE ....
well the price of the older ZED 10 is just £249
the new zed 60-10 is a whopping £399 !!!!!! not so cheap anymore !!!!

Other than that , this new install from allan and heath is a massive step forward in small mixers. absolute quality and i am very happy to leave my dynacord cms 1000-mark 3 at home.
For me the major factor is the sixe , i can slip this zed into a little laptop messenger bag and im on my way out the club door , rather than a full size heavy gator case on my shoulder takin half the furniture with me on the way out !

Not ripped off, just paid the premium for being an Early Adopter.

Largely, but not entirely, dysfunctional.

Quite so...

I've lost count of the number of times I've researched prices for days, made a decision about price vs reputation, made the purchase and then found two weeks later that someone has now lowered the price. Prices vary hugely across suppliers and are always changing - up and down. I've also been caught by the "I'll wait a few weeks" approach when prices have then gone UP!

Gear is worth what we think it is when we buy it ... if we pay the price asked then it's worth that to us.

Just ordered my ZED10FX (rotary, not faders) today from Thomann. £253 inc a gig bag and allowing 2.75% non GBP charge on my credit card.

I'll be using it both in my, ever diminishing, home studio as well as live. I'll also be trying out with my iPad so I'll let you know how I get on.

Update

Took delivery of the ZED10FX. Nicely built / nice feel considering the price.

Plugged in an iPad (via USB) and it works straight away. Integrating it with my PC / Cubase was more tricky. After a bit of Googling I discovered that I needed to download an ASIO4All driver - job done. Only remained to dismantle my old DIY rack and shove the Alesis 12R mixer, patchbay and Alex reverb into the attic. Its all very compact and quiet.

Next step is to try it with the PA at rehearsals on Sunday and then gigs the next few weekends.
