Unity Audio will be shipping the new Unity Audio Boulder Mk II at the end of June. The active three-way active monitor will retain all the attributes of the original Boulder Mk I, reviewed in August 2012 (http://sosm.ag/08-12-unityboulder). These include the Baltic Birch sealed plywood cabinet, albeit slightly larger to accommodate the two new 8-inch woofers, the original coaxial 5-inch midrange speaker with folded ribbon tweeter, and the same custom Class A/B amplifiers and crossover.
The results of the four 8-inch woofers over the previous four 6.5-inch woofers is an increase of 4dB in SPL figures and even greater low frequency extension with the -3dB point in the low 30Hz region and the high frequency -3dB point at 36kHz.
According to Unity Audio, the Boulder MkII offers the same fast tight transients as the Mk I version, and also thanks to the Norwegian-made 8-inch speakers from SEAS, provides bass that can be felt as well as heard. Unity Audio claim that the new woofers produce clearer and more detailed low mids, right up to the crossover for the 5-inch mid driver.
“Tests with existing Boulder users and dealers has been amazing, everyone loves the MK II and many have ordered upgrades for their MkI's which is possible as in the past we supported Rock MkI customers by offering MKII upgrades. With the Boulder MKII we've hit that balance of having a really super accurate detailed monitor for mixing but is also a fantastic vibey monitor to work while writing and tracking a band” says Kevin Walker, MD of Unity Audio.
A pair of Boulder MkII monitors will cost £5998 including VAT in the UK, and $8350 in the US.
