Uncivilised G'Rooves
(AUDIO / WAV CD SET)
Created by the rather obliquely named 'ZTime', Uncivilised G'Rooves is a 73-minute 56-track audio CD that also comes with a separate WAV file CD-ROM. Released on the British-based Xenon Music label, this is Xenon's first foray into the world of sample CD production and if Uncivilised G'Rooves is anything to go by, we hope it won't be their last.
Arranged as a series of up-to- the-minute drum and percussion performances, the loops start out at 72bpm and move through the release up to the dizzying heights of 174bpm. Each track is presented as a percussion block, usually lasting anything between 10 and 20 seconds, which is then deconstructed into numerous mix elements following the main loop.
Stylistically, the multi-talented ZTime (also credited with digital editing, artwork design and layout) clearly has a brain hard wired into the latest developing production trends, and uses his skills as both a sound designer and drum programmer with enviable aplomb. R&B is one obvious area where these loops have both an audible pedigree and a potential marketplace but, instead of sticking to the tried and tested formulas of the past, Uncivilised G'Rooves continually pushes the boundaries of both rhythmic format and sonic creativity. Covering some 102bpm of tempo variation across the disc, there are some wildly diverse drum loop ideas with nods in the direction of drum and bass, as well as pseudo ambient percussion and even the gleefully metallic 'clonks' of hardcore industrial music -- which are given a refreshingly 21st century spin.
One of the most impressive elements of this release is the dynamic and original collection of single-hit sounds, assembled to create each loop. Whilst there are recognisable analogue stalwarts such as the TR909 on display, ZTime never shies away from taking a few risks by replacing kick drums with explosions or snares with blisteringly snappy and heavily processed sound effects. Nearly every track is infused with such lively and infectious rhythmic juice that you almost begin to imagine song ideas forming in your head before the end of the loop!
If I had to look for a downside I would say that, with only 56 actual drum loops (a few of which are variants on previous tracks), this release may seem less tempting than many others that promise millions of drum loops for your sixty quid. Don't be put off though because, in the quality versus width argument, I'll take 56 drum loops which I can imagine using time and again, over bulk mediocrity any day. When soundware is this fresh, original and impeccably crafted you can't help but be impressed.
