Jeff Ellis: Engineering Frank Ocean

Video Feature By Will Betts
Published December 2016

Grammy-winning engineer Jeff Ellis has been working virtually in secret for several years as go-to engineer for enigmatic, genre-bending R&B artist Frank Ocean. Jeff’s work can be heard on both 2012’s Channel Orange and this year’s long-awaited follow-up, Blonde, which went to number one on both sides of the Atlantic. We talk about how to prepare for the unexpected, engineering from an artistic standpoint, monitoring and a technique technique called 'The Chicago Jingle' for getting the sound of a large ensemble from few players.
