Fostex G16 and OSCar - Servicing/Repair

Postby cavalcade » Sun Apr 29, 2007 10:05 pm

Hello,

I used to be a massive poster here... well, massiveish anyway. Not sure if anyone will remember me...

However! Anyhoo!

I have a Fostex G16 16 track reel to reel recorder which needs a bloody good service.

I also have an OSCar that has finally died.

And finally, a Berhinger MX8000 mixing desk with a dodgy power supply.

Any recommendations for companies to try? I think Synth Repair Services Ltd has been recommended for the OSCar, but I can't find any reel-to-reel specialists...

Anyone have any ideas? I know the G16 is next to useless (I am almost 100% digital now), but I'd like to have it repaired and working for nostalgias sake :)

For big reel to reels I would talk to someone like Chris Notton but I'm not sure whether he does Fostex.

Cheers

James.

G16? Useless? Not to many!

Is it an S? Even if not, if the repair is affordable it's worth it.

Mind you i personally love tape. ;)

The MX is not too bad a mixer despite it's manufacturers reputation. Maybe not cost effective to repair though.

Good luck.

How do I get in contact with the mysterious Chris Notton? :)

I'd agree on the MX8000. I really only keep it because it looks quite impressive. I never actually use it....

The G16 used to be owned by Deacon Blue. Woo! Not sure if it's a G16S what's the difference between the two? It just says G16 on the case, and front of the manual... :) I'm curious. There's virtually nothing about it online, it seems mysteriously forgotten in the mists of time...

Hey dude. The S stands for Dolby S as opposed to Dolby C noise reduction.

I got an MX8000A from ebay fairly reasonably, althoogh a few months later the PSU threw a wobbly.
Dave Croft at Synth Service Centre did a quick turnaround on it, and it's behaved ever since.
I've still got my OSCar only running one oscillator unless the temperature is above 70.F (whatever that is in .C, I dunno) and for some reason half the patches have detuned by a semitone.
So if anyone has any ideas what's wrong, (Dry soldered joint somewhere?) I'd be grateful.

Dave.

Ataris which keep on going, 28 hardware synths. Still recording to tape.

this may not be the best place to post this, but if anyone has an oscar, working or not, i may be interested in buying or trading for it.

£1500 and it's yours. I'll even chuck in the manual.

It isn't! We have the Reader's Ads section for this kind of advertisment. The Forum rules prohibit this kind of thing here.

Thanks
